Houston preps for incoming fellows

The Institute of Engagement, a youth-created and youth-run civic action organization, is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and building community among youth through its youth-produced publication, Shift Press. The Shift Press Youth Fellowship is a stipend-supported opportunity for Houston high school-aged folks to tell their stories, gain knowledge about topics of their interest, and learn how stories impact all community action. The curriculum covers journalistic fundamentals and specifically asks fellows to reimagine community storytelling.

CSP grantee, Institute of Engagement, is responding to the pandemic and building community among youth through Shift Press. Shift Press is a youth-led, youth-produced publication that highlights the ways young people build, influence, and experience power in the Greater Houston area.

The Institute of Engagement is finishing up the curriculum for the Shift Press fellowship. The Shift Press fellowship is a unique opportunity for Houston high school-aged folks to tell their stories, gain knowledge about topics of their interest, and learn how stories impact all community action.

Each week fellows will participate in a lecture, newsroom, and guest speaker day with fellow-focused days in between. The curriculum covers journalistic fundamentals and asks fellows to reimagine community storytelling.

The fellowship team wants young people to take agency of their learning of issues that matter most to them. They’re preparing students by equipping them to facilitate and create parts of the curriculum and preparing resources in anticipation that fellows choose popular topics including environmental justice, LGBT+ rights, and gun violence.
